A three-nation meeting of Russian, British and American representatives is being arranged for the near future. In a related move, a Mediterranean commission is being established with Russian representation, signaling closer cooperation among the allies.
Washington reports that American and British production will soon mount a full-scale war against Japan alongside Germany not altering the Hitler-first strategy. The plan hinges on vast munitions and improved shipping to the Pacific, with a tri-partite conference to coordinate policy and a Mediterranean commission to manage postwar issues.
RAF heavy bombers pounded Berlin with 1,000 long tons of bombs in 20 minutes in a third saturation raid, dropping at about 50 tons per minute. Acting Price Administrator Chester Bowles reiterated that the Office of Price Administration will continue aggressive price cuts to reduce the cost of living. He noted weekly wages rose more than living costs while hourly wages remained stabilized. OPA aims to cut living costs 4.5 percent to align with stabilized wage rates.
Rubber Director William Jeffers quits, telling President Roosevelt the rubber program’s big job is finished. He plans to return to running the Union Pacific railroad, praising his service and naming Deputy Colonel Bradley Dewey as acting director expected to succeed him.
President Roosevelt on Labor Day urged workers farmers and employers to boost production to speed victory and save lives. He recalled past wars and stressed unity among Americans to maintain and increase output for weapons and supplies, noting current effort has been magnified by civilian labor and round the clock shifts. He pledged continued production as a path to defeat enemies and preserve freedom.
Mrs Eleanor Roosevelt wife of the United States president arrived today by airplane from Canberra where she met Australian government officials at an official reception in Melbourne on Sunday September 5.
Tokyo radio, recorded by NBC, said American planes attacked Japanese installations at Canton in southeastern China today. Nine B-25 bombers and 13 P-40 fighters took part, with two raiders reportedly shot down. The Japanese report offered no allied confirmation.
In Macon Georgia a Liberator bomber brought penicillin to treat 15 year old Anne Shirley Carter for a streptococci infection. The drug arrived from New York after a posted appeal by the Macon News and was rushed to the hospital, with a duplicate shipment later arranged. Barbara Gallimore, six, in Atlanta improved slightly after penicillin doses.
