A British air ministry report says a large Lancasters bomber fleet bombarded Berlin last night from a clear sky. The attack released about 1 120 tons of fire bombs and steel in a highly concentrated strike lasting 20 minutes, with German and Italian targets affected as Allied forces advance Rhineland bases.
London Sept 4 The Soviet summer offensive gained momentum along a 600 mile front threatening three key German positions east of the Dnieper river. Recapturing 400 villages, the Red Army moved toward Stalino Kondzor and Smolensk while Bryansk and Kharkov actions showed mixed results.

Maj Gen Lewis H Brereton presented the decoration, typically given by the president, to the heavy bombardment group commander in the Middle East theater.
Larchmont New York faces a rural fuel row after Fire Chief Alexis B Cunneen drove a village car toward Chicago for a Fire Chiefs convention.
