Protest Over Transfer of Western Electric Workers
The Communications Workers of America seeks a restraining order to stop Western Electric from transferring Burlington plant workers to Winston-Salem to fill vacancies. Local 3060 claims a five month old April 5 agreement requires Winston-Salem vacancies be filled first by local layoffs before Burlington hires. 87 workers from Burlington have been hired, with 80 more reportedly to come. Judge Robert A. Collier set a hearing for next Wednesday.

Gorilla suit arrest dropped in Raleigh case
Dist Atty Burley Mitchell says charges against Phillip Szostac for wearing a gorilla suit in public are dropped. He cites not wasting court time and a bid to curb the incident as reasons, while Szostac says his gorilla days ended due to rental and bank advertising plans. Szostac was arrested after moving from bar to bar on Hillsborough Street and handing out bank materials.
