August Jobless Rate Nudges Up to 7.9 Percent
The August unemployment rate rose to 7.9 percent from 7.8 percent as the Labor Department reported slower job gains. Employment increased by 74,000 to 88 million amid a 240,000 rise in non farm jobs and improved figures for adult men. Unemployment reached 7.5 million, the highest since last December. The report highlights politics around jobs with Ford and Carter campaigns, and Meany’s critique of unemployment figures.
