Women workers to double in plants to meet war shortage
Secretary Stimson said the War Department could double the number of women employed in Army arsenals depots and offices to address a manpower shortage. About 300,000 women already work on guns planes and tanks and in clerical roles with more being absorbed. He noted a policy to use women in all qualified capacities while not excluding men ineligible for military service. The Army also authorized individualized equipment designs to boost unit morale and has intensified the scrap metal recovery program and war observation efforts.
