Shaw Launches Black-Oriented Peace Corps Training
Shaw University has contracted with the Peace Corps to start a black oriented program to recruit Negro Americans for Africa. About 100 volunteers, including 40 to 60 black students, will train from Oct 1 at a Southport area Baptist resort and then teach in Kenya for two years after intensive Swahili study. The school signed a 310000 dollar contract and received a 360000 dollar grant for follow-up research. Dr Joseph Battle said participants may earn transfer credits toward graduate work at Shaw or other universities after Kenya.

Lori Johnson, 15, ran a five ton hayloader at Rural Olympics Fair in Lancaster California, stacking three tons of hay in 5 minutes 7.2 seconds.
