Valley Encircled To Trap Red Force

Reinforced U S and South Vietnamese troops ringed a valley south of Da Nang to trap part of a North Vietnamese division in the Que Son Valley. Expected to contain elements of two regiments of the North Vietnamese 2nd Division, contact was light, suggesting many troops may have slipped away. The allied force strength rose to about 3,000 with reinforcements.

U S Marines with a South Vietnamese battalion push from four directions into the hills around the Hiep Duc refugee center near Que Son. The fight centers on Deo Ram peak with light opposition, as allied forces press to trap retreating North Vietnamese units in the Que Son Valley. Since Aug 12 about 1,000 enemy killed. U S losses about 75 killed and 328 wounded.

Stockton transplant recipient dies at 50

William Karraker, 50, an insurance executive and eighth Stanford heart transplant recipient, died Saturday after his heartbeat irregularities. He had been hospitalized at St. Joseph's in Stockton after a late Friday admission following a heartbeat issue. An autopsy was ordered to determine the cause. Karraker had filed to run for Stockton city council and helped plan a survivors list with other transplant recipients.

Six Israelis remained detained by Syrian authorities as passengers and crew of a Trans World Airlines Boeing 707 evacuated after a hijack hoisted the plane toward Tel Aviv before diverting to Damascus. Scott names Guy patrol commander in North Carolina

Governor Bob Scott appointed Lt Col Edwin C Guy to lead the North Carolina Highway Patrol succeeding Col Charles A Speed. Capt Charles B Pierce will become patrol executive officer. Guy to be promoted to colonel when sworn in. Guy, 52, joined the patrol in 1939 and holds multiple police science and chemical testing credentials. Pierce has served 22 years in the patrol and was promoted to captain in 1967.
