Liberation of France from Beachhead Record by Allies

Gen Dwight D Eisenhower's armies have set a record by almost securing a France beachhead, matching the 1940 blitz pace in places but advancing along a longer route. Since July 25 Lt Gen Omar N Bradley's American forces have pushed from St Lo toward Paris, with fast strides and heavy engineering support, outpacing German spearheads in parts. National Polio Fund Sends More Money to State

The State Foundation for Infantile Paralysis received 129474.17 from the National Foundation to aid the polio fight. Since June 1 the National Foundation has sent 229474.17 to North Carolina and counties plus private gifts bring total available funds to 280320. Four new polio cases were reported today. The state’s total cases now stand 28 short of the 1935 toll of 675.

Burlington Shows Population Increase

The Census Bureau reports Burlington North Carolina had 21 830 residents on July 19 1944 up 9 632 or 7 percent from 1940. Occupied dwellings reached 5 593 up 96 7 percent. The 1944 gender split was 9 410 males and 12 420 females. whites numbered 19 293 and non whites 2 537 versus 11 484 and 714 in 1940.
