Moscow reports show Red Army forces approaching Bucharest after a rapid advance through the Balkan kingdom. By midnight Russians stood about 17 miles from the capital, having pushed roughly 40 miles in a day, with the German petroleum supply in jeopardy and an official communique pending.
Rome dispatch reports the Adriatic port of Pesaro captured by Polish troops after a bitter urban battle. Allied forces crossed the Foglia River on a broad front and pressed toward the Gothic line with several towns including Urbino and positions near Pontassiera and Florence.
Salisbury Aug 31 George KR Uzzell of Rowan county says he will stay in the race for the speakership. He told the Salisbury Post DOJ assurances prevent his removal to Texas over an indictment tied to Sherman anti trust law. The federal case in San Antonio is not set for trial until late this year.
A spokesman for the Duke of Windsor says the Duchess of Windsor is entering Roosevelt hospital New York for an appendectomy. An official British information service notice confirms the plan and adds a 10 room suite and six nurses have been engaged for her care.

Trevor Hendricks seven year old son of Mr and Mrs T R Hendricks of Trinity Rt 3 Randolph county was taken to the infantile paralysis emergency hospital in Heibory for treatment diagnosed by Dr J G Groome his physician. The child grew ill a few days ago and is not believed to be seriously ill. Health authorities report no new cases locally since last Friday when the city noted its seventh case.
In Taylorsville on August 31 a superior court jury found Marvin Matheson guilty of first degree murder for the July 9 slaying of Taylorsville Police Chief Dexter Millsaps.
In Gainesville on August 31, three Florida men pled guilty in a militia guarded court and were condemned to death by electrocution for raping a year old white woman. The verdict was announced publicly, with about 300 spectators present, as guards escorted the defendants to Raiford awaiting a governor set execution date.
Tobacco prices in North Carolina's new bright leaf belt averaged a cent below the government weighted ceiling of 43 cents a pound as light sales continued. For the first two days of the season, Monday and Tuesday, buyers and sellers assessed the market in Wilson.
