High Point YWCA Celebrates 35 Years of Service
The High Point YWCA marks 35 years since its founding with programs drawing about 2,100 adults and similar numbers of youngsters. Activities include swimming, dancing, crafts, dramatics, sports, YTeen clubs, adult recreation and education, Lady's Day Out, English classes, and a room registry service for working girls.

Research At Duke Sheds Light On Retina Vessels And Heart Disease
Dr John B Kam and colleagues at Duke Hospital report that retinal blood vessels are highly sensitive to high blood pressure and may reveal vascular damage before kidney tests. Using a Bausch and Lomb fundus camera and infrared filters, retina photographs measure blood flow and oxygenation to detect early disease, guiding treatment. Grants from the American Heart Association support long term studies on preventing rheumatic fever and heart disease, plus grafting vessels and heart surgery under controlled cooling and dry conditions. Normal retina image shows vessels in a healthy eye, while retinal changes can precede other signs of vascular damage.
