Man Dies After Hand to Hand Fight With Lion in Africa
W H Herren a railways contractor from Aberdeen Washington died October 25 on a steamer on Lake Victoria from wounds after a hand to hand struggle with a wounded lion two days earlier near a Tanganyika camp. His companions included Mrs Herren and W H Colman among others. The incident occurred as Herren approached the wounded beast. a companion killed the lion and Herren later required amputation before dying. The party planned to return to London with Herren's ashes.

Black man Slayer Is Sentenced to Die in Electric Chair
In Greensboro on October 30, Will Moore, 58, a Black man, was convicted of first degree murder in a case involving the death of Vera Leonard. Judge Thomas J. Shaw sentenced him to the electric chair on January 8. Witnesses said Moore confessed to abducting and killing the child, then setting the Leonard home on fire. He also claimed responsibility for other arsons and killings in prior years.

Fireman Killed As Head Strikes Bridge
Salisbury report: Claude B. Lane 45, of Greenville North Carolina, a fireman on Southern Railway train No. 3, was killed when his head struck an overhead bridge at a street crossing while the train passed. He leaves a widow and several children. Brothers Guy Lane an engineer in Greensboro and the Rev Daniel Lane in Elizabeth City. Lane was born in New Bern and previously lived in Spencer for years.

Miners Rescued Alive as Five Die in Mine Blast
Rescue crews pulled alive two of six men buried since a Saturday explosion at West End Coal Mine in Mocanaqua Pennsylvania. John Tomashunis and Joseph Mazzoni survived after about 133 hours, while John Molitoris Jacob Tinus Henry Ceglarski and Paul Novak died. Novak and Tinus perished instantly. Molitoris and Geglarski later succumbed to after damp. Mrs Tomashunis awaited news as doctors said her husband and his fellow survivor were in excellent condition.
