The Associated Press reports 22 deaths across the Carolinas from violent incidents and accidents over the week-end. Among the victims were five children burned in a Honea Path Belton farm house fire, a motorcycle wreck killing Rudolph Reeves and his wife, and several highway and factory accidents.
Washington October 29. A measure to fix the size of the navy comes up this week as Congress begins a busy period. The bill would set a two ocean force of 1082 major ships and authorize two new vessels. It precedes a large relief and rehabilitation appropriation debated this year.

Manila report details survivor Batshinia Abad testimony at Yamashita war crimes trial. She described four Japanese sailors bayoneting and shooting about 100 women and children at an aid station in February, with over 50 killed. The testimony marked opening of the general's trial before a military commission.

The national labor relations board announced that Thomasville Furniture Company employes in Thomasville North Carolina voted against designating the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners AFL as their bargaining agent. Of 110 valid ballots, 49 favored the union and 61 opposed it.
In Danville Virginia on October 29 the Old Belt auction centers reported flue-cured tobacco at the season's high levels with improved leaf quality. The sixth week showed more fine and good grades and fewer fair and common grades as sales remained heavy. Lower qualities led the price gains though some lemon wrappers sold as high as 72 dollars while most bids ranged 54 to 65 dollars.
Batavia Java Oct 29 Soekarno arranged a truce at Soerabaja between native nationalists and British Indian troops after the bloodiest fighting of the allied occupation of Java. Soekarno flew from Batavia to Soerabaja in an RAF plane to intervene amid street battles with Indonesians using Japanese armoured cars and light tanks.
Report from Batavia says Indonesian nationalists using armored cars and light tanks killed about 25 members of the British Indian force at Soerabaja. President Soekarno reportedly arranged a tug of war today at the naval base. A British officer gave the casualty estimate and noted areas with civilians in internment camps also suffered casualties.
After a truce, firing subsided in the headquarters zone of the British 49th Brigade and in the central sector, easing combat near key command positions.
A United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization commission said eliminating much world hunger within a few years is practicable. The world has the knowledge to wipe out malnutrition and its social and physical diseases, and must apply it. The report was prepared for FAO’s full conference amid nearly three weeks of study of global food and farming issues.

Washington. War Department consultant Dr George P Baker proposed an eight point plan to Senate military affairs urging peacetime production of 3000 military aircraft yearly to build engineering tooling and production capacity. The package calls for plant dispersion private use terms government ownership and a sustained weapon testing program. Baker urged immediate adoption to avoid delay in war readiness.
President Truman cancelled all scheduled out of town trips citing heavy Washington workload. Eben Ayers said the move affects a North Carolina Georgia weekend visit Lib erty Co November 15 Oklahoma City Fort Sill November 19 and Waco Texas. He may shift plans to attend the labor management conference opening and the eastern advisory council meeting. A major radio address on wage price policy is planned for 10 p.m. EST tomorrow.
