Baltimore Labor Shortage Forecast for War Plant Needs

A study led by L F Williston and colleagues finds Baltimore in 1942 must supply 59,000 new workers for war plants, while 371,000 are available but only 27,000 are immediately visible. The result is a 32,000 worker gap amid an area expanding toward 1.25 million people by next April, with 22,000 housing units needed this year and a planned total of 14,000 new units barely covering the shortage. Transportation, schools, and water systems are strained by the influx and ongoing construction.
