Wreck Kills Family Of 3 Near Asheboro

A two car crash on Highway NC 42 south of Asheboro killed a Greenville Tennessee family of three, Louis Niles Barrett 23 his wife Margaret 21 and their two year old son Louis Niles Jr. The other driver Lester Eugene Davis 26 of Robbins a Fort Bragg soldier was charged with three counts of manslaughter and reckless driving. Davis was transferred to Fort Bragg for custody as the Barretts were pronounced dead at Randolph Hospital. The incident raised Randolph County 1967 highway deaths to 29, matching the previous year’s total.

Steel Haulers Strike Talks Break Down in Pittsburgh

In Pittsburgh AP reports talks to resolve the steel haulers strike collapsed as the National Steel Carriers Association and striking truckers refused a seven state mediation panel meeting over loading wait time penalties. The panel planned another session, while truckers attorney Daniel Berger said no resumption. The Pittsburgh vote 437 to 134 approved a five point plan to end the walkout.
