East Village demonstrators stage a ritual on Friday rehearsing the exorcism of the Pentagon before a Washington peace rally. Performers painted green, spread earth symbolism, and burned a model Pentagon as part of a planned Oct. 21 action. Some insist the rite could destroy the symbol, while others doubt the effect or note its pentagram shape offers resistance.
U S Marines artillery and air units repelled a 500 strong North Vietnamese assault on a Leatherneck base just below the DMZ. The battle followed weeks of quiet to unleash heavy shelling on Con Thier and nearby outposts, as an Air Force F4 Phantom was lost with its two man crew, the 698th U S combat loss. Air patrols faced mixed weather while delivering supplies and facing MiGs and SAMs in the NE quadrant.
U S Marines report two killed and 21 wounded after a U S plane bombed Con Thien by mistake. North Vietnamese forces then attacked a Marine battalion south of Con Thien with tear gas and smoke grenades, sparking a three hour battle lit by American flareships. An elderly Mormon couple, Ira and wife Lloyd, survived six days with no food in Last Chance Canyon south of Utah. They drank brackish creek water, kept a fire, and relied on prayer as a rescue plane brought them to Salt Lake City. The couple began their trip on Oct 6 when a wrong turn left them stranded after a car washout.
Senator Richard B. Russell, head of the Senate Armed Services Committee, says President Johnson is not ready to order bombing of Haiphong port but is acting decisively on other Vietnam measures. Admiral Sharp argues Haiphong bombing could end the war quickly, a view Russell credits though not a prediction of future action.
