Senator McCarthy charged a German radar scientist who escaped a Russian lab provided U S officials with reports on top secret documents stolen from Ft Monmouth in New Jersey and used by the Communists.
The United Nations Security Council debated Trieste as Yugoslavia and Italy clashed over the zone. Soviet proposals for an international administration drew cold reception, while US and British stance remained cautious ahead of London talks. Chicago authorities planned to return Estell Dunn and Vernon Temple to Johnston County for questioning about Freddie Dunn s death last April. Dunn, 35, and Temple, 39, were picked up in Chicago and are linked to a farm sharecropper case on Temple s property near Four Oaks Wake County.

In Lafayette Louisiana three month old Mouton twins joined at the spine began normal lives at home. Born July 22 they left Foundation Hospital New Orleans with parents Mr and Mrs Ashton Mouton. Doctor Weissmiller said they are out of danger though some surgery remains.
Stockholm Sweden Prime Minister Winston Churchill was awarded the 1953 Nobel Literature Prize for his historical writings. The 175 292 crown prize was announced by the Swedish Academy after a brief session. He becomes the first statesman to win the literature prize, though many have won peace prizes.
Charlotte textile machinery dealer Sam Schwartz was found guilty on two counts of tax evasion. He faces three years in prison, suspended on payment of more than $85,000 in back taxes and a $10,000 fine, as ordered by Judge Wilson Warlick yesterday.
FBI focuses on the St. Joseph area in the Bobby Greenlease kidnapping case as a mysterious parcel post package, mailed a week after the child’s abduction, may reveal $300,000 of ransom. Bonnie Brown Heady and Carl Hall, held in Jackson County Jail, admit the abduction.

Only ten requested repatriation to Red China while the rest chose to stay, amid tense security and Indian guards enforcing access. Interviews were delayed by facility wrangling and started after Indian custodian troops cleared crowds from compounds.
October’s fair and dry weather persisted across most of the United States with a touch of summer in parts of the Midwest. Wet spots appeared in the Pacific Northwest northern Rockies and southern Plains while a 2.20 inch storm hit Gage Oklahoma yesterday. Temperatures rose across the Midwest to New England with highs of 85 in Rochester Minn 86 in Omaha and Kansas City and 82 in Minneapolis.

In Washington a Republican and a Democrat on the Ways and Means Committee say Congress should cancel a one billion dollar cut in excise taxes due April. They cite the need for revenue to approach a balanced budget as President Eisenhower urged action. The Jan 1 cuts remain under consideration, with a five billion dollar annual revenue loss projected.
