High Point Enterprise (Newspaper) - October 14, 1974, High Point, North Carolina Capitol letter Liberal conservative tags Seldom accurate by Robert b. Cullen 8,?, press writer Raleigh a most North Carolina voters would probably say that As a general Rule the Republican party Fields the More conservative candidates and the democrats the More Liberal. That a the National stereotype. Like most stereotypes it is based in a Grain of truth. Across the nation As a general Rule democrats Are a More Liberal a than republicans. But stereotypes taken to extremes can be More deceptive than revealing. Successful politicians tend to be pragmatists rather than ideologues and they make decisions on issues which defy pigeonholing into a a Liberal or a a conservative slots. It was a supposedly conservative Republican president for example who took the a a Liberal Steps of imposing wage and Price controls and opening the door to communist China. In North Carolina s Senate race the stereotypes Are almost useless. Republican William Stevens and Democrat Robert Morgan do not align themselves at a Well defined Point on anyone s spectrum. They take positions to suit their own ideas and perceptions of the mood of the electorate. Morgan for example favors the a a Liberal idea that Congress should establish a Strong consumer Protection Agency. He favors some form of government credit rationing. He talks about tightening tax Laws to prevent businessmen from taking deductions. Stevens the a conservative businessman opposes those ideas and in Many cases take Robert Cullen the opposite stance. But Stevens also favors a withdrawal of Aid to South Vietnam he is a member of the a act. Meanwhile Morgan favors Aid to South Vietnam and does not apologize for managing the segregationist i. Beverly Lake gubernatorial campaigns in the 1960s. Range of issues Stevens is probably a More Liberal than Morgan. A political analyst might look at their positions and decide that there were really two Basic kinds of issues. One kind might be called economic political. It would include issues like regulation of business and consumer Protection. One this kind of Issue Morgan is a More the second grouping might be called social political. It would include issues like abortion prayer in the schools marijuana and race relations. On these Stevens is probably a More the political analyst would then take into account american traditions As isolationism slavery and libertarianism. He would conclude that there was a logical reason for the positions taken by both candidates. But North Carolina voters for the most pay won t see it that Way. And therein might lie the key to the election. Most voters identify with a party for a variety of reasons. Some do because their fathers did. Others con Sider themselves democratic or Republican because they feel a Liberal Quot or another group of voters will hear something about a candidate s position on an Issue or issues that pleases them and vote accordingly. The problem facing William Stevens is a Tricky one. He must avoid alienating those staunch Republican voters who consider themselves conservatives and will assume that he is unless he proves otherwise. At the same time he must make inroads into Robert Morgan s support among the democrats. Considering Morgan s record the left Wing of the democratic party is More Likely to contain potential defectors than the right. That is Why Stevens is appearing before the a act and attacking morgans connection with Lake. He no doubt is sincere but he also chooses to publicize his views because he feels the Black vote can be wooed away from Morgan. As an underdog Stevens has Little Choice but to try to win those Liberal democrats with his positions on the social issues while retaining his Republican support with his economic views. Morgan s people say they Aren t worried. A for every Liberal he might gain hell lose a conservative to us a said Campaign aide Howard Kramer. The election on nov. 5 will Tell the tale.
