Fire shuts off psychiatric ward at UNC hospital
In Chapel Hill a Saturday morning fire confined to the fourth floor south wing of North Carolina Memorial Hospital temporarily sealed the psychiatric floor. About 50 patients were evacuated with six patients and seven staff treated for smoke inhalation. Maurice Vickers, a maintenance man, spotted the blaze in a patient room and used a extinguisher before the room burned out. Investigators from the state fire marshal will probe the cause. The hospital, part of the University of North Carolina Medical School, moved patients to other rooms in the six story building as crews battled flames with ladders and fire escapes.
