Heinz traces the sauce name evolution from kechup and keechiap to ketchup. English sailors in Singapore sparked a tomato based version, blended with mushrooms cucumbers and walnuts before tomatoes dominated. By 1869 Heinz popularized it as America's favorite sauce for burgers and beans.
