New York October 11 The cotton market opened with a 12 to 19 point gain from Liverpool cables and a firmer outlook abroad on December contracts. Prices rose to 21.90 on the call but soon eased as profit taking and holiday factors appeared, leaving futures barely steady with December at 21.90, January 21.02, March 21.86, May 21.82, July 21.62.

High Point Considers City Limits Extension Vote

In a special adjourned meeting the High Point city council approved at second reading a resolution to hold an election on extending the city limits. Registration opens October 21 and runs to November 11. Election November 21. Voters within the city and proposed annexed area may register. Registered voters who do not vote are counted as against the extension. The proposed boundary extends 5 miles south, 5-8 mile north, 1-2 mile east and 1-2 mile west from current limits.

Coldboro Men on Farm Tour

A group of 28 business men farmers and citizens left Coldboro for a three day automobile trip to study diversified farming and the boll weevil area. They lunch in Fayetteville and traveled to Bennettsville Darling ton Hartsville and Monroe with Southern Pines ready to guide Thursday. Farm Demonstrator A. K. Robertson leads the party and R. L. Raleigh report says former Speaker Brummitt fell ill during a speech and underwent immediate surgery after the address. Doctors said the operation should secure recovery, though he suffered an hernia and stiffness on the bench during the talk.

Topsy the elephant runs wild in Cape Fear swamps near Wilmington

Four ton elephant escaped while loading onto a circus train and roamed Cape Fear swamps. She crossed the Cape Fear river, damaged property, and fled before being returned to the circus. trackers say she may be in Brunswick County swamps, making capture difficult.

McArthur and Bennett of Rocky Mount Virginia led bids for laying about 35000 feet of sewer pipe and 20000 feet of water mains in the city but council will decide tomorrow 48 hours after opening bids. Total bids cover 22800 feet of sewerage and 11000 feet of water mains with several firms listed and amounts ranging from 32527.10 to 38750.00.
