City Schools Defend Music Firm Arrangement Controversy
High Point Schools Superintendent Edwin West defended a Pearson Music Co. arrangement with the city school system amid a possible Umstead Act violation. Special Deputy Attorney General Speas warned the program may breach state law as school officials met with Pearson representatives and parents to discuss instrument purchases or rentals. Harris Music Co. sought court action, claiming implied endorsement and competitive edge for Pearson. The matter was said to be closed with no further action planned by West.
