High Point Enterprise (Newspaper) - October 8, 1976, High Point, North Carolina By pan ski Buji take with a Hiil qualifying r Mug Ancey you d re tur Jelly the Maryland r e football game this saturday As the feature of me week because of the importance of the conference race. And it May turn out to be that Way. But it would be unwise to Overlook another game taking place about to Miles away in Winston Salem Between Wake fewest and Clemson. The importance lies not in the fact that Wake Forest has part of the league Lead in the Atlantic coast conference and needs this game to stay even in what appears to be a close fight for first place when the honors Are handed out. What makes this one lug is Clemson s coach red i Arker. Parker has become so mad the last couple of weeks about not being Able to pull out a Victory he feels like pulling out his hair. Or Teeth or both. Parker has cussed and moaned and has been penalized for taking out his frustrations on the Field during a game so what ordinarily might look like a Good win for Wake Forest since it has shown signs of becoming a solid Ball club under coach Chuck Mills now must have the riled up tigers emotional Factor taken into consideration and that is going to make picking a Winner that much More difficult the schedule slims Down from previous weeks because conference play is beginning to take Over the spotlight. Only four games Are on tap. The Clemson Wake and Maryland state games Are both in the utter noon. Virginia is at South Carolina and Duke at Miami of Florida in night games. Carolina has an open Date. A miss on state kept last week s picks from coming out All on the Good Side coming up on the Halfway Point in the season the picks Are 19-8-2 heres a look at the upcoming games. Clemson 1-2-1 at Wake Forest 2-3 a you can see Why Parker of Clemson is upset when he has said Quot a team with a successful running game will normally come out on top in each and then watches his tigers out Rush opponents the last two weeks and come up four Points shy of two victories. Clemson is Way ahead of last years production in the Rushing departments but is still spinning wheels at the starting blocks. The Tiger defense is also improved Over a year ago nevertheless Parker says of Wake Forest. Quot they Are at least seven and probably to Points better than Georgia a. Gee. Red the deacons Don t need building that much. They re doing pretty Good on their own. Betcha Wake is favored by the bookies in this one but the pick Here is for Clemson to squeeze by 28-24. Maryland 4-0 at . State 1-3-1 a this one could have come at a More opportune time for the Wolf pack. Here s Maryland on the cover of sports illustrated and state just peeking out if you Haven t heard it by now the terrapins have the conference record tied for league victories with 15. Carolina fans Are As mean a group As state fans so How Are they going to vote. Or. Pull it s their team Lycord but they also hate state. State has become the team of big plays while Maryland has become the team of consistent defense Over Hill and Over Dale. Everybody knows by now about Quot afternoon Delight Quot by Way of record state coach to rein says this one should be Quot a Spectator Well state won t take this one lying Down so to speak but Maryland is still the class of the conference until somebody proves differently. Maryland on top 28-24 Duke 2-2 at Miami 1-2 a Dukes offence in t the question with Mike Dunn having turned into a 61 per cent completion passer. Running solid defense is not Only a question it s an entire test after last week s Quot Effort Quot against Pitt. Miami runs from the i formation and in the past has a been about equally divided Between the pass and Rush. That May change saturday. Quot Miami will have As much physical size and Speed As any team we face this year Quot cautions Duke coach Mike Mcgee Quot they return 17 starters and 37 Letterman from last Miami played Nebraska on relatively even terms last week before losing and even last year played the top rated teams without getting embarrassed. Oddly though Miami has been vulnerable to the pass itself. The opposition is averaging 200 Yards a game through the air. I d like to pass i this one myself but no can do. Got to go with Miami in the Orange bowl 35-31. Virginia 0-4 at South Carolina 3-2 a if Points were Given for being a Nice Guy Virginia coach Dick Bestwick would be a Winner. But they Arentt and he in t and won t be this year. Bestwick sums up the Cavalier situation this Way Quot we re really getting great Effort from the majority of our players. But we re still having too Many breakdowns individually and always a different one. They need to have More concentration and intensity in crucial the bad thing is Virginia is nearly always in a crucial situation which makes crucial Normal for the Cavaliers. And so it goes. South Carolina has slipped a few times but the gamecocks still appear to be a Strong Ball team. They Are acc Caliper at least whether or not they get Back in the conference. Artificial turf is the playing surface so bad weather won t bother either team. And Virginia wont bother South Carolina. The Bison were intercepted twice and fumbled the Ball at their 28-Yard line after seven plays the panthers cashed in the turnover for six Points and the winning conversion Points. Quot we made so Many mistakes out there it was Terry Kelly Central assistant coach said according to the Central coaching staff there was really no question As to the decision to go for the win Central had to have it Dudley was led by the Power packed running of fullback Braxton Williams. As he ran Loose most of the night and accounted for the final eight Points Jamieson stadium was the victim of showers and torrential downpours throughout the evening making the Ball difficult to manage for both squads the reverse Hurt the Bison throughout the contest As the Panther split and ran to both sides of the Central defense on Dudley s final Possession the panthers went Back to the play on a third and four situation from their 33 it worked again and Dudley held the Ball while the clock slipped away. Andre Marks was very effective for the Bison in the first half As he piled up Over 79 Yards but he was injured in the latter part of the third period and saw Only limited action the remainder of the game the loss brings Central s record to 1-5 on the season while posting a 0-3 conference Mark for All intents and purposes this loss pretty Well drops Central from the conference race. His Boot came with just 37 left in the game to break an 6-8 deadlock it also came on a do or die play on fourth Down. And it went perfectly through the uprights for As exciting an ending As possible in a High school football thriller. Those who endured the drenching downpour have asked or paid for a better ballgame and there were plenty of umbrellas and plastic sheets draped across both bleachers allowing fans to witness the showdown Between the two teams previously unbeaten in the Central Carolina conference Quot i feel sorry for the football fans in Davidson county who had to stay Home because of the rain Quot noted a mud soaked Ledford head coach Bob Spain Quot last year we lost to West with 34 seconds left and we had to live with it for a year a a the panthers also had to live with losing the state playoff berth to the Green dragons and that undoubtedly inspired them to turn the tables Quot people have been saying a Ledford has a pretty Good football team but they Haven to had to do it tonight we had to do it a Spain said what the panthers had to do was come Back from an 8-0 deficit in the fourth Quarter and they did it thanks to two Fumble recoveries by Robert Brown his first came after the wildest play of the night during which West a Scott Yarborough deflected a pass into the arms of Ledford s Reggie Alexander who carried the Bali for a 38-Yard gain Down to the West 8-Yard line before fumbling it away to West a Jody Shoaf the Ledford threat was revived just two plays later however when Bill Butts find the handle and Brown came up with the Loose pigskin on the dragon 12. Butts made three straight tackles to Force Ledford into a fourth Down situation but All the panthers needed was one play a a spot pass from David Rush to Callicutt for the touchdown the All important conversion was run by Danny Brenda off tackle after Back to Back penalties placed the Ball just Short of the Goa line. That left the score at 8-8 with 7 50 left in the game and a tie breaker seemed eminent until Brown recovered still another Fumble at the dragon 8-Yard line with i 33 on the clock again it took the panthers All four Downs and again All they needed was one As Callicutt trotted out on the Field and split the goal posts too 11-11 w.
