Downtown Coordinator Board aims to hire “Mr. Downtown” for High Point revival

Enterprise Sunday Editor Lee Mortimer reports the Downtown Development Board in High Point moving on a first objective to hire a centralized coordinator. A subcommittee led by Bart Phillips Jr. and Fred Alexander seeks a candidate described as a shopping center manager to lure investors and solicit agreements for downtown properties. The board plans a low interest loan program to guide rebuilding with federal aid, while pursuing private funds to pay the coordinator. City funds are uncertain amid council resistance. Plans cover attracting government offices, furniture and hosiery showrooms, tourist programs, entertainment, and coordinated bus service. Several improvements are underway, including demolition of the old Railway Express Agency for a downtown minimal on Broad Street plus a municipal bus transfer station link to Main Street. A private developer negotiates with Southern Railway to convert the passenger depot into a restaurant. Underway work includes undergrounding utility wiring south of downtown.
