Salisbury Oct 5 4 at Chew Sweeney Pat Sweeney 55 popular Salisbury man died this morning at Rowan Memorial hospital where he underwent an operation last Friday. A lumber worker born in Ambus Ohio he moved to Charlotte about age 15. Survived by widow Lois Williams of Lexington and two children Edgar Jr. and March both in college, plus two stepchildren Will Reed and Mrs Reed of Columbus Ohio. Funeral Thursday at home eleven conducted by Rev Mark Ine and cremation in Washington. He was active in Southern Manufacturers club Charlotte Country club and various civic groups and Episcopal church member.
Raleigh N C October 5 Attorney General Harry Mc Mullan said the hearing before Judge W C Harris in Wake Superior Court on W O Burgins mandamus to require certification by the state board of elections as democratic congressional nominee for the eighth district was set for 2 oclock Friday afternoon The notice had fixed 10 oclock tomorrow but the change was agreed to by all parties Burgin contested the nomination after the board said it would certify C B Deane of Rockingham as nominee The matter has been before county and state boards and the courts since July.

Prime Minister Chamberlain told the House of Commons Britain seeks the release of Czech officials in frontier districts and Czech residents in Germany held as hostages during the occupation of ceded territory. Davidson county election board members met in Lexington to consider state board instructions on declaring the eighth district runoff vote. Attorneys for D B Deane argued irregularities. the state board had struck 146 absentee ballots, boosting Deane by 23 votes but Burgin held a larger lead on returns.

Damages: 2000 actual, 1000 punitive.
