An Oct 4 AP report says Earl of Perth and Foreign Minister Count Galeazzo Ciano met to discuss appeasement possibilities between Britain and Italy. Diplomats cautioned that no immediate outcome was announced and the meeting was exploratory.
President Roosevelt announced an 11 million dollar federal allocation for flood control work in New England. The move follows deadly floods and a hurricane two weeks earlier that killed hundreds and caused extensive property damage.
J R Gaskins assistant cashier of the State Bank and Trust Company appeared in Pitt County court today to answer a warrant charging him with converting the bank's money to his own use.
Girolamo Valenti, chairman of the Italian anti-Fascist committee, testified before the Dies committee that consular officials and secret Fascist agents are circulating propaganda among about 200 Italian American organizations in the United States. He described threats and pressure aimed at obtaining information and enforcing conformity to Fascist ideas.
Chicago Oct 4 Bill Lee and Charlie Ruffing were named tomorrow's starting pitchers for the World Series opener between the Cubs and Yankees. Cubs manager Gabby Hartnett tabbed Lee who posted 22 wins and 9 losses as part of the Cubs pennant drive.

Virginia Annon an 18 year old girl was released from jail after Prosecuting Attorney T B Williams exonerated her for shooting and killing her 63 year old father John Annon Williams said the teen acted as he attacked her mother Virginia fired a rifle to defend Mrs Annon a story supported by her mother and sister Georgia and Sheriff James Adrian.
Budapest reports show Hungary pressing claims to Czechoslovak Hungarian minority territories with requisitions and export bans on metals textiles chemicals and leather. A cabinet meeting planned to decide steps if Prague refuses talks while mass meetings demand occupation of Hungarian districts. Reports of alleged Czech reprisals and eight Hungarian speakers shot in Bratislava were noted.
Raleigh Oct 4 Burgin attorney serves notice that a motion will seek a pre emptory writ of mandamus to force the state board of elections to certify Burgin as Democratic nominee for North Carolina eighth district. Hearings set for Thursday then possibly Friday with a request to permanently bar certifying Co B Deane of Rockingham.

From HENDAYE France dispatches report insurgents under General Franco advancing along the Gandesa to Mora de Ebro highway. Repeated attacks saw militiamen yield ground while rebels seized hills 361 332 and 321 after air bombardment and artillery and tank assaults.
Prague report says the Czechoslovak government opened talks with Slovak representatives on full autonomy for Slovakia. Cerma k, a minister without portfolio, raised the issue on behalf of the Slovak People’s Party in the October 4 discussions.
In Berlin on October 4 a man and a woman were beheaded for treason. The executions were carried out by guillotine as authorities announced the condemned had confessed to crimes against the state.
Elmert F. Andrews wage hour administrator said southern industry would be very cooperative in enforcing the wage hour act after a Birmingham visit. He noted progress nationwide with non compliance reports and urged industry labor and the public to proceed without police oversight. The act takes effect Oct. 24 and state laws may ease interstate commerce confusion.

In Lenoir North Carolina Fred Tolbert 24 died from a gunshot wound after a game warden A J Lyda shot at him during an attempted arrest Sheriff J C Tolbert said Lyda was arrested and posted bond Lyda claimed self defense while Tolbert family said the youth had no weapon and was fleeing Tolbert’s death followed wardens arrival to Tolbert’s home to arrest him on hunting out of season charges E B Kugler issued the warden’s version stating Tolbert fired first and Lyda shot in defense

Japanese forces report seizure of the Panpehshan forts opposite Tienkiachen after breaking the last permanent Chinese defenses on the Yangtze south bank below Hankow.
