War coverage discusses India’s political deadlock and Gandhi’s potential release as pivotal to Allied unity. Analysts warn a disunited India threatens Western aims and could spur an Asiatic bloc allied with China, altering postwar balance and Atlantic Charter trust.
American Italian officers report allied forces pressing north of Naples and Corsica as rangers and Corsican patriots close in on the German evacuation port. RAF bombers hit bridges on the Volturno and routes near Naples while heavy bomber strikes hit a convoy east of Corsica.
Charles Odom of High Point is jailed in Thomasville on a drunken driving charge after a wild chase along the Thomasville High Point highway. Officers reported multiple collisions including with a pole and a telephone post, ending when Deputy Kelvin Stone stopped Odom on Kenedy hill.
Allied destroyers depth charged a German submarine in the Mediterranean. The U-boat was rammed and sunk after surface forcing by the British and Greek ships. Five officers and 38 crew members were picked up by the allied forces.
High Point college student government and governing councils travel to the summer cabin of Dr. N. M. Harrison in Randolph county for a weekend retreat. Speakers from High Point Greensboro and Asheboro will discuss Student Government topics while social activities accompany the program.
Thomasville report shows Willa Mae Davis of High Point received a 60 day suspended sentence on vagrancy with condition she avoid Thomasville township for two years and pay court costs. Shefield is also noted with a suspended 12 month sentence for violating liquor laws, contingent on a $25 fine and staying compliant for two years.
In Mexico City Joseph E. Davies predicts continued cooperation with Russia and its allies. He says Russia will honor promises with England and the United Nations and will not seek to impose doctrines or territorial designs after the war. He notes Stalin seeks mutual respect for each side's views.
Arnold J. Koonce as mayor announces a public auction of several High Point properties on October 18 1943 at 11:00 A M. in High Point City Hall. Bids may be cash or terms not less than ten percent down and fifty months balance. City reserves right to reject all bids.
