American Flying Fortresses escorted by Thunderbolts blasted Emden port facilities in daylight. The raid supported by fighter escorts reportedly downed 19 German fighters. Two Fortresses were lost.

Draft Director Hershey says deferment decisions must weigh work type and finances, not just number of children. Allied air raids target St Omer and Emden as U S eighth air force boosts nightly bombing power in Europe.
Allied forces announce the Australian ninth division captured the air and sea base at Finschhafen in Northeast New Guinea at 11 am Saturday after a two-pronged attack with American air support. Japanese marines fought to the last, then dispersed, with about 100 bodies reported. The victory gives the Allies control of Huon Gulf, 70 miles from New Britain, as operations in Lae and Buna-Gona continue.
Naples restoration began as American and British engineers moved in within hours of Allied patrols entering. Food water and medical supplies arrived in large convoys while German snipers persisted in spots. The AMG reported no mines but harbor explosions continued and malnutrition affected many children.

German fighter planes tried a new attack method on U S Flying Fortresses based in England. Maj Kirk R Mitchell of Oklahoma City reported the first such frontal dive under a Fortress and belly shots. Nazis also sent captured Fortresses to near the bomber formation. Mitchell said the tactic will fail and we'll get them sometime.
Capetown reports official confirmation of the sinking of the British liner Ceramic with more than 500 people aboard last November. The vessel, en route from England to Capetown, likely fell to a submarine in heavy seas with no confirmed survivors. The passenger list included many South African and Australian families.
A Budapest dispatch to La Suisse said Germany offered Russia an armistice last June before the June offensive began. Russia is said to consider new political moves akin to the 1939 non aggression pact with Germany. Reports of separate German Russian peace talks have circulated from axis allied areas. The Soviet ambassador to Sweden Alexandra Kollontay was quoted as denying German peace rumors and predicting closer ties with the western powers after the war.
Rear Admiral Husband E. Kimmel and Major General Walter C. Short waived technical barriers and agreed to delay court martial proceedings for dereliction of duties at Pearl Harbor. The War and Navy departments said trials would occur after the war, with risk to war effort guiding postponement.
