Little change in temperature tonight across North and South Carolina with light winds and mainly clear skies. Temperatures expected to edge around the mid to upper 60s inland and lower 70s along the coast. Overnight lows near 60s in most areas.
President Roosevelt blamed Congress, the press, radio, and officials for national ills while defending war effort motives. He noted reporters and columnists spread unverified reports and urged officials to stay silent. He observed growing female labor in factories and expected more by next year, and said only governors connected him politically on the tour. He left Washington afterward.
President Roosevelt continued a cross country inspection tour stopping at Uvalde and reuniting with John Garner as they greeted workers from bomber plants in Fort Worth and New Orleans. The trip later moved to Camp Shelby and Fort Jackson while observers noted war urgency and shelters along the way. In Thomasville a shipfitting school prepares for opening though an instructor is not yet secured.

James Leach Doby, 81, died at his Denton home yesterday. Funeral at Newsom Methodist Church Saturday 11:00 a.m. Interment in Clear Springs Cemetery. Survived by two sons Charles R. and Manly R. Doby, two daughters Liza J. and J. Lillian Doby, two sisters Mrs. Mattie J Grush and Mrs. W. O. Surratt. A prominent farmer, former county commissioner and public school teacher, he served as a church trustee and Bible School teacher. Born February 2, 1861, son of Isaac Doby and Jane Glover Doby. Married to Anne Lou Daniel, who died a year ago.
Ernest J. Rothrock of Fair Grove near Thomasville dies after weeks of illness at City Memorial Hospital. He worked 25 years at Thamesville Chair Co. Survived by two sons Lester and Howard, five daughters, his mother Fannie Rothrock, one brother A. R. Rothrock, one sister, and ten grandchildren. Funeral at Fair Grove Methodist Church Saturday at 3:30 p.m. with Rev. Lanter, Cox, and Vaughn presiding. burial in church cemetery.

Communiques claim 900 German killed in one sector, 18 dugouts destroyed, and tank and mortar losses.
