Rail Post Office Cars to Be Removed From 162 Passenger Trains
Washington AP The Post Office Department will remove railway post office cars from 162 passenger trains nationwide by year end, risking over 17.1 million in annual railroad revenue and possible discontinuation of some passenger services. Twenty railroads and over 2,224 postal workers will be affected as staff transfer to other postal duties. William J. Hartigan claims the efficiency drive targets costly, unnecessary service and disputes claims it will kill rail passenger service. Last year passenger operations ran a 420 million deficit while postal revenues to railroads ran about 330 million annually, with post cars contributing about 30 million.
