Directorship of Ports Authority Still Unfilled

The $32 000 per year post of executive director of the State Ports Authority has been vacant for 18 months and may stay open amid political infighting a vague statute and transportation department instability. Deputy Director Jack Lee has been acting since spring last year and also serves as director of commerce. Transportation Secretary G Perry Greene calls the situation not good and notes bi partisan support for Lee but concerns over his longevity in a Hunt administration. The board is controlled by Holfhouser appointees and Hunt may realign the authority to commerce. A 1975 statute requires board appointment on the secretary's recommendation with governor approval.
