Washington reports the United States protests any move to undermine Chinese maritime customs in Shanghai. Secretary Hull says Washington is in contact with Britain and other powers while reiterating, independently, that no joint action is planned.
The British ambassador in Tokyo warned Japan that Britain would defend its maritime rights and communications facilities in the Shanghai area. London signaled Far East matters could gain prominence in upcoming talks amid European anxieties over Shanghai developments.
An army plane crashed four miles south of Greenwood South Carolina killing Lieuts. C Morgan and L C Woods Randolph field San Antonio Texas. The craft circled CCC convoy and vanished in woods before parts were found scattered. Woods died at the controls while Morgan was killed in the wreckage and Black of Fort Benning reported the pilots were en route to a hospital. Investigation opened as fog and rain hampered search.
Cincinnati report says Anna Marie Hahn age 31 was sentenced to die in the electric chair March 10 for the murder of Jacob Wagner 78 a gardener acquaintance. The verdict followed a November 6 conviction by a jury of eleven women and one man amid claims of a mass murder plot to kill for gain.
Dexter William Fellows, dean of press agents and famed herald of the circus, died in Hattiesburg Mississippi at age 66 after bronchial pneumonia followed typhoid fever. He worked with Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey and trouped with Buffalo Bill Cody, dying after illness began on October 9 while on duty.

A jury found Mrs Line Pope Godwin guilty of manslaughter in the killing of Furman B Godwin, her third husband, in 1936. The judge sentenced the Dunn widow to two to five years in state prison after mercy was recommended. Her appeal rights were noted as her attorneys prepared action.
The People Congress for Democracy and Peace in Pittsburgh opened a two day study on war and fascism. Rep. Jerry J. O'Connell proposed an American boycott of Japanese goods and changes to neutrality laws before about 5,000 attendees amid pickets from the Catholic Radical Alliance claiming communist influence.

John A. Hartle, a Winston-Salem grocer, is jailed on a murder warrant after police say he returned home to find Walter Lee Smith and Hartle’s wife in a darkened room and shot Smith as he advanced. Smith died of two bullet wounds. Survivors include Hartle’s wife, a daughter Hattie Lee Bullard, three sons, two sisters, and three brothers.
Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt and Mrs. James H. R. Cromwell the former Doris Duke head for Arthurdale West Virginia to tour the Homestead Community built by the Resettlement Administration. They travel by automobile to inspect the RA project and meet residents.
Sear L. Wheeler age 74 elder brother of Senator Burton K Wheeler of Montana died at Marlboro hospital after leg amputation for gangrene yesterday. He had been ill for weeks and his condition led to the operation before his death today.
Berlin reports the resignation of Dr. Hjalmar Schacht as economics minister clears the way for a Nazi guided financial system. Walter Funk will take office January 15 as economics minister and push rearmament and building programs, while Schacht remains tied to Reichsbank and cabinet roles.
