Congressmen urged quick action at the special session to revise corporate taxes. They cited talks with President Roosevelt who they say may modify surplus and capital gains taxes and allow early consideration. Treasury doubts on revenue from the substitute measure slowed momentum.
In Lillington on November 26 the North Carolina court heard the state’s pistols evidence in the trial of Mrs. Hina Pope Godwin the 37-year-old widow accused of arranging her third husband Furman E. B. Godwin’s killing She pleads self defense claiming a drunken duel with her husband who opened fire on her John Faircloth testified he heard gunfire from the Godwin home on July 7 1936 and saw a distressed woman depart the scene A prior conviction led to a retrial appeal to the state supreme court was filed after a 1935 verdict ranged 5 years in prison declined on appeal
In Charlotte a three pound twelve ounce girl born two months early survived after a Caesarean section performed within minutes of the mother Mrs. Robert Helms dying from an acute cardiac condition. Drs Bradford Gallant Hunt led the emergency effort at Mercy Hospital with the baby showing a fair chance to live. The rare operation occurred about three to five minutes after death and followed swift hospital action.
In Raleigh on November 25 the Supreme Court refused the appeals of William Perry Hudson Robinson and Walter Caldwell who were sentenced to death for capital offenses. With no clemency remaining the execution date is automatically set for December 19. Perry was convicted in Chatham county for murder Robinson in Mecklenburg county and Caldwell in Iredell county for criminally assaulting a white woman.
In Asheboro on November 25 Arnold Lassiter, son of Bascom and Mrs Lassiter, fractured his arm just above the wrist after being struck by a Garland Mabe driven car while crossing Sunset avenue near The Little Castle cafe. He was treated at the local hospital and a doctor’s clinic, where the fracture was set, and he is now recovering at home. Police Chief Dewey Bulia called the incident unavoidable.
In Cleveland and across 16 states a Greyhound drivers strike escalated with fist fights and four arrests as last minute peace efforts by labor department conciliators failed. A striker stopped a bus at the terminal, crawled under it and was taken for investigation as passengers were unloaded.
In St Louis on Thanksgiving eve 584 workers at the Ford assembly plant began a day of rest as talks continued. UAWA regional director Desmond Garst said the strike would pause with no picket lines while unions seek a 55000 war chest to counter Henry Ford. Police remained on duty and disorders were few.
Mobs of hungry Chinese storm Shanghai rice shops on Thanksgiving Day to obtain food. Guards protect rice trucks and a British steamer unloads at the Bund while 2,000,000 refugees endure cold weather and hunger. Japanese war actions and blockades worsen supply as Shanghai fights to feed its 3,000,000 population.
Detroit area plants announce layoffs as Chrysler reduces workweek to 32 hours and Pontiac sees 15 000 GM workers idle earlier. Ford and GM report no broad cuts, GM noting weekly employment about 2000 below last month’s average.
Madrid faced one of the heaviest bombardments of the Spanish Civil War as insurgent and government batteries clashed through the night. Casualties were reported with at least about a score killed and many wounded, with severe damage in dense districts like Chambers and Cuatro Caminos. A $112 million private utility expansion plan was announced after a Roosevelt conference, with Floyd U Carlisle of Consolidated Edison and Niagara Power pledging two year spend. Wendell Willkie signaled support for prudent investment valuation. The move comes amid debates over rate valuation methods.
Washington reports outline of crop control provisions in the house farm bill. Tobacco marketing quotas require two thirds grower approval with penalties for over quota sale. Corn and wheat quotas hinge on indicated yield, 15 percent above normal, with per bushel penalties. Cotton uses ten year bases with acreage limits and two cent per pound excess sale tax.
