Negroes invest heavily in building and loan stock in North Carolina
Durham observers report that black shareholders hold over 6 million dollars in white associations and nearly 700 thousand in black ones, based on the 1926 insurance department data. Across the state there are 1,380 black shareholders in seven black associations with total assets about 659 thousand. 12,451 black members in white associations imply a total investment around 6 million, totaling near 7 million overall. The Durham Conference, including C. C. Spaulding and J. M. Avery, plans a December 7 1927 meeting to map black savings credit and insurance, with a stocktaking aim at the status of the American negro.
