Since the Dairy Commission’s formation 16 years ago, the number of regulated dairy farms has declined from about 5,400 to 2,338, as costs, debt, and input needs bite into profits. Governor Bob Scott, a dairy farmer, notes unique Tar Heel challenges while wholesalers maintain steady pricing under commission guidelines.

State Senator backs minimum price for milk deliveries

North Carolina Senator Ralph Scott proposes overhauling the Milk Commission and creating a three member full time body similar to the Utilities Commission. He urges a state backed minimum price for milk delivered to plants and allows retailers to set prices so long as losses fall on distributors or farmers. The commission weighs continuing or changing its Fair Trade Order amid a court ruling on below cost sales. A milk price war in Asheville shaved half gallon prices to 45 cents at one store.
