The Mahogany Rock Skylift near Sparta on the Blue Ridge Parkway milepost 234 promises panoramic views from six gondola cars built by Bell Engineering. It rises about 625 feet above the ground at 12 mph, with a restaurant, and routes across the Blue Ridge region from Chilotte to Greensboro.

Moon Explorers Link Up With Command Vessel

Apollo 12 moon explorers linked the Intrepid to the command ship in a nose to nose docking after a day of lunar surface work. Conrad and Bean piloted the Intrepid, Gordon photographed the event, and Mission Control guided the approach during a tense, TV televised rendezvous. The crew traded good humor as they completed a complex docking in 12:58 pm EST, docking maneuvers described as an orbital ballet.

Earthquake shocks Carolinas prompt widespread chatter

Tremors felt across multiple states including North and South Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee and Georgia lasted five to ten seconds. Apollo 12 astronauts continue their moonwalk from the Lunar Module led by Mission Control, walking northwest to scientific sites. They test the seismometer by rolling rocks, photograph craters, collect core samples, and repair equipment while traveling a long circuit from Bench to Halo and Surveyor craters, ending near Black Crater.

Ex Gov Moore Appointed To N C Supreme Court

Former Governor Dan Moore is named to the North Carolina Supreme Court to replace Bobbitt who became chief justice. At 63, Moore brings a middle of the road stance and long service as a Superior Court judge and state legislator. He will serve the remainder of Bobbitt’s term ending 1971 and seeks a full eight year term next year. Moore, born in Asheville, educated at UNC and its law school, has been with a Raleigh law firm since leaving the governor’s mansion.

Nigerian VC10 Crash Near Lagos Kills 77

A Nigeria Airways VC10 from London crashed four miles north of Lagos airport with 77 dead after losing radio contact while landing. Weather was foggy at the site and clear at the airport. The wreckage lay in dense jungle beyond Lagos outskirts. 67 passengers plus 19 crew were aboard, including a British pilot and copilot and a Ghana Airways crew among the seven on board.

Army Sgt Claims US Troops Massacred Viet Civilians at My Lai

Army Sgt Michael Bernhardt testified he saw American soldiers kill hundreds of South Vietnamese men women and children in My Lai in March 1968. He said Company C 1st Battalion 20th Infantry carried out the massacre by order of the company commander. Photographs published by the Cleveland Plain Dealer allegedly showed the killings.
