Joseph P Kennedy former ambassador and patriarch of the Kennedy family dies at 81 after strokes and decline. A funeral Mass will be held Thursday at St Francis Xavier in Hyannis with Richard Cardinal Cushing as celebrant, assisted by Rev Joseph Maguire.
The Senate passed a bill opening the way to a lottery system for selecting draftees and sent it to President Nixon as part of draft reform. The vote was by voice with Sen. The measure repeals a three year ban on random selection and aims to start Feb. 1 with a one year draft liability period.
