Deposed Turkish sultan Mohammed VI fled Constantinople seeking British protection. He stated he was not abdicating but removing himself from danger. The sultan, his son, and staff slipped from the palace to a car, then to a British base and warship.
London papers react with gratification at the Conservative victory and a strong opposition view. The Daily News praises a breath of air in Parliament as Labour wins seats, while the Daily Herald foresees another Labour government within 18 months. A Communist candidate is elected for the first time in British parliamentary history.
Jurors who found Clara Phillips guilty of second degree murder for killing Alberta Meadows say her smiles aided her in avoiding a first degree verdict and possible death penalty. Jurors noted the need for compromise to avoid a hung jury. Sentencing could range from ten years to life. defense plans a new trial next Monday.

Henry Pettiford a negro janitor at Wachovia bank was knocked unconscious last night when he fell from his bicycle in front of Hart's drug store after colliding with another pedestrian. He was revived in minutes and taken inside. the other man, whose name was not learned, helped carry him into the store.
In Constantinople on November 17, Kemalist efforts to smuggle the interned Turkish destroyer Ak hissar out of the Golden Horn past Allied control were thwarted. The attempt, disguised as a merchant ship, was detected and blocked by Allied authorities.
Tom Skeyhill, renowned Australian soldier-orator, spoke at the South Main street graded school auditorium. He described Europe’s wartime devastation, the down fall of civilizations from war, and warned that a new big war would doom civilization.
The North Carolina Lutheran synod voted to accept Daniel Ryhne’s $300,000 gift for Lenoir College’s endowment fund and pledged $350,000 more to reach a $960,000 permanent endowment. St Matthews Lutheran Church contributed $10,000 toward a $106,000 state mission fund. plans include a new medical parish paper and expanded ministry. The school will adjourn later today with Charleston favored to host next year’s meeting. Church seeks more funds to enlarge mission work and boost recruitment for clergy and mercy work.

Ed Troglin was convicted in municipal court this morning for operating a motor vehicle under the influence. He received a $650 fine plus court costs. Will Spencer also appeared and paid the fine for speeding.
