Burns agency fabrications eyed in grand jury probe

Testimony from a Burns operative alleges the Burns detective agency produced reports for use in the Sinclair oil conspiracy case to influence jurors. McMullin, who joined October 15, worked with government prosecutors to trap Burns men led by William J. Burns, with Pinchot and Roberts involved in planning.

Revenue simplification plan clears House panel

The joint congressional committee on internal revenue taxation backs most simplification proposals, approves a favorable report to the Ways and Means Committee, but splits on changing Section 226. Representative Greene cites tax evasion by holding companies and urges a definite, enforceable rule. The panel also suggests consolidating revenue offices to about 60 locations. The Ways and Means panel will take up the report Monday in executive session amid debate on tax cuts.

Holland tunnel opens linking New York and New Jersey

The $48 million Holland tunnel linking New York and Jersey City was formally opened with ceremonies on both sides of the Hudson. President Coolidge sent a telegraphed message as crowds observed the first midnight opening for commercial traffic. The twin 9,250 foot tubes carry 3,800 vehicles per hour and feature advanced ventilation for a safer, cleaner airflow through the canal.

Woman renounces suicide at harbor after cold water temp

In Baltimore on November 12 AP reports Minnie Risik briefly resolved to die by drowning but changed her mind when she learned the water was too cold. Her husband Joseph found a note detailing the plan and spot before she reportedly returned home laughing for the first time in months.

Asheville barber John Burton was arrested in Asheville as investigators probe the Burns ville Miller hotel fire. Carroll S Maddox remains jailed in Yancey county charged with complicity. police seek more evidence as hearings are not yet scheduled. The Burnsville hotel with 25 rooms burned after being discovered at 1:20 A.M. Friday.

Six Hurt in Greenville Dark Corner Gun Incident

In Greenville County dark corner six people, four men and two women, were injured when a shotgun incident erupted after Ernest Lewis, released on bond for a murder case, obtained a warrant for Othel Campbell accusing him of firing into a car. Nellie Hamrick suffered 18 shot wounds to the face and head.

Father Sentenced for Manslaughter in Card Game Killing

In Annapolis Maryland on November 12 a father of 17 was convicted of manslaughter for killing a bootlegger during a card game. He received a $100 fine and 60 days in jail, far below the usual one to ten year term. Judge Robert Moss cited the bootlegger’s role and the defendant’s large family in delivering the sentence.

James Fowler 49, a farmer and father of 17, was convicted of killing bootlegger Dewey Norris in a card game dispute. He received 69 days in jail and a $100 fine, far below the usual one to ten year term, after noting the victim’s bootlegging and his large family.

Red Barbee Held on Assault Count

Fred Barbee of 206 East Green Street was arrested by Policemen Deal and Licence on a charge of assaulting a family member. Mrs Barbee signed the warrant and Barbee posted a $100 bond for Municipal Court on Monday morning November 21. Barbee is a prominent High Point real estate owner.

Body of 20 Year Old Girl Found in Barn

The body of Lyda Case a 20 year old Henderson county girl was found in a barn on the Ben Souther place three miles from Hendersonville on the old Asheville road. Sheriff J C Hill and Coroner A L Beck investigate a death believed to be poisoning with the body placed in the barn after death. Two youths from a nearby city who reportedly left with her are being sought as witnesses or suspects. No marks were found on the body.
