Police investigated a missing person case and told the Bakers to fill the hole in their yard. Before the fill, Mrs. Baker said “then Jeff” as the family asked a historical museum to explore what appears to be the top of an old Indian or Spanish well at the bottom of the hole.

Yale University professor Fred C. Barghoorn, a political science scholar and former U S Embassy staffer, was arrested in Moscow on espionage charges. The 52 year old resident of New Haven had arrived Oct 1 on a tourist visa and was last seen Oct 12 in Tbilisi. The U S Embassy sought details while noting no official confirmation from Moscow.
Dr W Perry Crouch of Asheville was unanimously elected general secretary and treasurer of the Baptist State Convention. He urged Baptists to end internal bickering and remain strictly Christian in actions. Crouch, 56, succeeds Dr Douglas M Branch, killed in a February auto accident near Ahoskie. He warned against group pressure and unfair tactics harming democratic processes.
Ten protestant ministers from Massachusetts, responding to an emergency call by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., were set to arrive in Williamston North Carolina today to join civil rights demonstrations. Nine are from Massachusetts and one from Vermont, forming the new Massachusetts unit of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference directed by Kinel.
A group of six Episcopalians, three Baptists and a United Church of Christ member announced peaceful demonstrations in Williamston, NC, to affirm Christian brotherhood. They traveled from Boston and would be met by Rev Paul Stagg, aiming to challenge segregation with a nationwide call from clergy.
Williamston Police Chief Lloyd Banks said the town has been quiet for weeks and reports of 11 ministers headed there to join civil rights demonstrations are unconfirmed. He noted a last demo on Oct 18 that led to arrests and then dispersal, and he offered no further comment on the ministers’ visit.
