Oswald Jacoby analyzes a misplayed spade battle in a bridge rubber style hand. West opens diamonds, East signals, and South errs chasing an overtrick, allowing a crafty defense to force down two. Proper defense and a different diamond play would have yielded a win for East and West with rubber-like precision.

Reward for Safe Driving Proposed in North Carolina

North Carolina motorist safety records may cut liability insurance costs under a new preferred risk rating plan approved by Insurance Commissioner Charles F. Gold. The plan, revised to exclude innocent victims from harsher rates, would apply surcharges only when a company paid a damage claim or a driver was found at fault in court. A single property damage accident in 18 months keeps rates at manual levels, two such accidents or one bodily injury accident raise rates by 10 percent, and worse records raise by 20 percent.
