In Tryon North Carolina residents at Valley Courts motel were stranded for about eight hours after the Pacolet River flooded and washed away a bridge. About 80 guests remained until a temporary plank span was built by rescue workers and Red Cross aid provided food and warmth. By 10 p.m. engineers cleared a temporary route to allow cars to depart.
