New York shares moved higher with the Dow Jones Industrial Average up 3.12 to 613.06 in the first half hour. Gainers led losers 52 to 0 among NYSE issues as optimism grew over a rebound from last week and hopes that tight money worries were overstated. Sony led early volume with unchanged at 7 percent.

A rain heavy tropical low mood moved northward off the North Carolina coast toward the Mid-Atlantic states. It was expected to lose tropical character by Tuesday as winds diminished, passing about 100 miles south of Cape Hatteras, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami.

Expelled from Israel he is flown to Rome to recuperate and await a new post likely in the Americas or Australia.
Eldon Elsberry, a volunteer fireman, and two others watched water surge down Toccoa Creek at 1:30 a.m. The trio attempted to reach a trailer park in a Jeep but were unable to cross a flooded bridge. The Jeep was swamped and two partners were lost while Elsberry clung to a tree.
Severe storms dropped up to five inches of rain in six hours, washing out bridges and collapsing small dams. Hot Springs, Marshall, Boone and Asheville saw water as deep as seven feet, with evacuations and widespread damage to stores and homes. Dams on Reems Creek and Howard's Creek failed, destroying several houses and draining a 52 acre reservoir. Further east, Piedmont and coastal areas faced lesser floods including Chacowinity and a Goldsboro shopping center roof collapse.
