New Homes Rise In Costs In North Carolina

Mortgage officials report a 6 to 8 percent rise in new home costs across North Carolina driven by inflation in materials and higher labor wages. Materials up over 2 percent and labor costs up about 12 percent per square foot push a $20,000 house to around $2,500 more. Despite higher prices, demand remains strong with sales often preceding foundation completion, while builders note state output lags potential and funds flow to more favorable markets.

Mystery Plaque found by bulldozer stirs local history talk

Kenneth Proctor of the city planning department reported uncovering a stone like plaque during basement digging at a Kernersville property on Route 1. The 22 to 3 feet high curved top piece resembles an old sailing vessel from Columbus era. Proctor noted a crack across its top half after a tractor passed over it. He plans to have experts study its origin and purpose, possibly sending it to Chapel Hill for examination. The site sits about 200 feet off an old plank road and the plaque was unearthed as a loader dug six feet down.
