Chief Justice Taft urged quick moving reforms to criminal court procedure to enforce punishment on offenders as a crime deterrent before the national crime commission. He supported efforts to deter crime, improve policing, speed indictments and trials, and limit delays in post conviction reviews to prevent new trials.
CHICAGO AP report notes Mayor responds to injunction suit to stop destruction of pro-British books in the Chicago Public Library. He argues library directors decide what to receive or remove and that no injunction can restrain destruction. The suit, filed by J Kentner Elliott after a threat by Library Trustee Herrmann to burn texts on the lakefront, seeks to curb book destruction while the case proceeds.
Asheville AP report: Bishop Edwin D. Mouton of Charlotte told about 700 ministers and laymen at the western North Carolina conference that the Methodist Episcopal Church South is more democratic than the United States government. He noted freedom in church membership and questioned autocratic rule. The session also released Sunday school gains over ten years with enrollment rising from 84 145 to 135 500 and funding from 51 512 to 223 627.

Walter James Oakes aged 24 died early today near Guilford College after a weeks long illness. Burial will be at Lee's chapel after 2 30 p m services conducted by Rev W T Albright. He is survived by his father Wesley Oakes of Greensboro route five and four brothers and three sisters.
Alexander I. Simpson, a traveling coal man from Chicago, died last night at a Greensboro hospital after a brief illness he contracted while stopping at a Greensboro hotel. His body was shipped to Chicago for burial.
John Hefner is jailed in Newton on second degree murder charges for injuries to his mother-in-law Mary Jane Beard. She died after Hefner allegedly punched her while punishing his child for not attending school. Beard warned not to harm the child and Hefner struck her repeatedly, breaking ribs and rendering her unconscious.
A grand jury convened to unravel the Fall Sinclair Teapot Dome case heard new testimony as prosecutors seek a fresh trial. Juror talks and alleged jury contact prompted a mistrial and preparation for a January date. Witnesses including Day and Kidwell appeared. Day may be questioned again and bond considered.
Governor Alfred E. Smith rebuked Colonel Theodore Roosevelt in a published statement calling his charges loose and foolish. Roosevelt accused Tammany Hall of corruption and Albany conditions, while Smith challenged Roosevelt to file proper charges and warned against misrepresenting the governor’s role.

The British liner Tahiti collided with a crowded Sydney ferryboat in harbor today causing at least nine deaths and feared to rise to fifteen. The ferry sank within three minutes, sending 150 people including many school children into the water as search operations continued after nine bodies were recovered.
In Nicaragua a US marines and national guardsmen patrol clashed with Sandino bandits near El Chipote. Sixty bandits were killed or wounded, one marine was wounded by shattered glass, and two guardsmen died. The search continues for missing Second Lieut. E. A. Thomas and Sergt. Frank Dowdell after their October crash.
The weather bureau issued a storm warning noting a tropical disturbance about 30 north and 74 west moving northward. No strong winds yet. warnings extend from New York to Eastport. Disturbance over Virginia and the Carolinas will move northeastward with increasing intensity.
About 300 Anglo American members in Paris honor Ruth Elder at a luncheon at the American Club with Capt. George W. Haldeman. Elder blushes and speaks little, noting she is a poor speechmaker. The pair later flew from Le Bourget over Versailles and Fontainebleau on a sunny day.
The steamship Arlyn, owned by A. H. Bullis, bound Tampa to Baltimore with phosphate rock, sent a distress call yesterday. Coast guard cutter Yamacraw found her twenty miles southeast of Charleston lightship and will tow her to Charleston today.
