Workers report no air conditioning and extreme heat in a plant with blocked ducts. Boss dismisses complaints by age, claiming hot flashes or temperature. An official investigation finds a blocked air duct in the system.
For the first eight months of 1971 North Carolina reported 1,141 traffic deaths, compared with 1,074 in 1970. States nearby show different totals and critics caution against unadjusted comparisons. NC ranks high due to rural roads and extensive paved miles. urban sprawl correlates with lower death rates elsewhere.
In Stockholm two German educated scientists now in North America win physics and chemistry Nobel prizes. Dennis Gabor of Stamford Connecticut earned the physics award for three dimensional lensless photography isography. Gerhard Herzberg of Ottawa Canada wins the chemistry prize for molecular structure knowledge.
The House voted 222 to 135 against the measure under short cut rules, leaving the bill alive but exposed to desegregation pressure from the administration. A two thirds vote would have been required for passage as it was discharged without Rules Committee approval. Speaker Carl Albert attempted to push it through without forcing Northern liberals to vote on busing.
Voters in Kentucky and Mississippi selected governors while New Jersey and several states elected legislators and mayors. The results, seen as bellwethers for 1968 national trends, featured Frank L. Rizzo in Philadelphia and Louise Day Hicks in Boston, with others like Joseph Alioto facing challenges in San Francisco.
White House lobbyists seek Congress support to extend foreign aid spending beyond November 15 while Senate leaders call for a total reform. Senator Mansfield argues the U.S. spends too much on military aid and may let the program lapse to force change. Senator Church favors a 30 day extension for Senate committee work. Church says the Senate rejected the current 2.9 billion package and demands major reductions in military aid and a ban on U.S. military funding in Indochina except for withdrawal.
Three men robbed a First Citizens Bank branch on the Fort Bragg reservation just before noon. They fled after shots were fired, then forced Pope Air Force Base airman Michael Capps to drive to Raleigh and return $2,700 for his Pinto before continuing north. Police believe the four men include the three robbers and a fourth driver of the getaway car. The incident capped North Carolina’s 30th bank robbery of the year, with an undetermined amount of money taken and a pursuit from Spring Lake toward Harnett County.
In India the Bengal coast devastation from a tidal wave and cyclonic storm is reported to have displaced millions. Official counts show 3,391 dead with up to two million missing across eastern Orissa while 10,000 families feared dead and Cuttack Balasore districts severely damaged.
New York food consultant Dr. Paul Fine tells AMA audience that Americans eat prolifically across eight to ten meals daily yet fail to receive proper nutrition. He blames aging ideas of three meals a day and industry failures for poor guidance to homemakers and stresses better education for buyers and manufacturers.
Washington AP notes Selective Service introduces 1H holding classification for most 18 year olds and abolishes 1Y. New procedures allow hearings with up to three witnesses, aiming for fair claims and reducing disruption. Movements toward 1A A0 and 1A RI classifications outlined with December effect.
