Union Suggests Ballot On Ford Wage Proposal

The CIO United Auto Workers proposed a nationwide ballot for 140,000 Ford workers to choose between a guaranteed annual wage or Ford stock purchase plans. Independent Honest Ballot Assn. would oversee within two weeks. If the union wins, a new contract would follow. if not, the company would fund the guaranteed wage with 12 cents per hour per worker.

Memorial Day weekend traffic toll tracks predicted rise

The National Safety Council warned the holiday traffic toll would climb as 360 deaths were forecast for 78 hours from Friday 6 p.m. to midnight tonight. By 9 a.m. EST, 264 died in traffic, with 90 drownings and 39 in other accidents for a 393 total.

Vukovich Dies in Indianapolis Grand Prix Pileup

Bill Vukovich perished in a five car crash during the Memorial Day race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The 1953 and 1954 500 winner led most of the early laps before colliding on the backstretch after Ed Elisian’s car hit the wall. Ike Welch confirmed the Fresno champion’s death.
