RALEIGH AP Retired persons 60 and older with incomes under 3500 would get a 5000 property tax exemption on their homes under Senate Finance Committee approval. The measure moves to the Senate floor. Senator Ralph Scott said county officials oppose the bill, which would reduce local revenues. two dissenters warned of a dangerous precedent.
Charles Crutchfield of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Chamber argues that blacks are not ready to run a large city due to educational background. He warns that bedroom communities could create a largely black city ringed by white suburbs. He opposes Oakdale annexation and a bill allowing local votes on city incorporation.
North Carolina Senator Har grove Bowles proposed finishing current legislative work, taking a 30 day recess, then returning to push a comprehensive reorganization of higher education. He plans to introduce a resolution to set the schedule.
