Kenneth C. Royall a tall Southern general who became the last secretary of war and first secretary of the Army died in a Durham hospital after five weeks of treatment for internal disorders. A Truman appointee he served from 1945 as special assistant to the secretary of war then undersecretary, secretary of war in 1947 and secretary of the Army after reunification. He resigned in 1949 and joined a New York law firm before retiring to Raleigh near Goldsboro. Funeral is set for St Stephens Episcopal Church in Goldsboro at 5 p.m. Thursday.
