NASHVILLE Tenn AP James Earl Ray is sent back to his maximum security cell after losing a bid for a new trial in the King assassination. Judge Faquin said the guilty plea March 10 was entered knowingly and voluntarily and Ray waived rights to an appeal. Ray’s lawyers plan to appeal to the Tennessee Court of Criminal Appeals, claiming coercion by prior counsel.
Washington AP reports a National Clearinghouse for Smoking and Health survey shows a sharp decline in teen smoking over the last decade. Among 1967 68 1 year olds 25.6 percent of boys and 15.7 percent of girls said they smoked, down from 1957 figures. Roy L Davis credits health education programs for the drop while noting total smokers remain about 49 million.
Apollo 10 crew Air Force Col. Thomas Stafford and Navy Cmdrs. Eugene Cernan and John Young landed at Ellington AFB after 8 days in space aboard their moon mission. They reported back on preparations for Apollo 11 with postponement risks and praised the mission’s success.
