Inflation Signals Rise in Prices Across Sectors
Inflationary trends appeared in the latest Labor Department report with the April consumer price index at 119.3 off the 1947-49 base. Food costs led the rise while furniture housing medical care and transportation also climbed. The May outlook suggested higher living costs and automatic pay boosts for auto aircraft and farm equipment workers. A congressional committee warned inflation pressures would persist with GNP rising to about 435 billion this year and spending by consumers and governments expected to increase. Appliance sales fell with layoffs at General Electric Louisville and General Motors Frigidaire Dayton. GM warned 1957 auto market may barely match 1956 totals of 5.85 million vehicles, after earlier forecasts of 6.5 million.
